Field service postcard

Peabody 1

A unusual a 'field service postcard'. These were usually printed cards which allowed the writer to save time and effort by simply crossing out whatever phrases did not apply. In this case the serviceman has gone to the trouble of writing all the options by hand, then crossing most out. His message home therefore reads:

I am quite well, and am going on well. Letter follows at first opportunity. I have received no letter from you for a long time.

The card was addressed to Mrs Reg Chappell and signed by Rifleman D. Peabody on 29 May 1915. Rifleman Dan Peabody (Service No. R740) was part of the 11th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action just over a year later (on 20 June 1916) and is buried near Ypres at Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery, Grave S.1.
